A glimpse into the future of cruise tourism in the Maldives

Male’, 15 May 2025 – The arrival of the luxury cruise liner AIDAstella at Male’ Commerical Harbor marked a significant moment for the Maldives, as more than 2,100 international tourists disembarked to experience the country firsthand.

This visit was part of AIDAstella’s Indian Ocean route, introduced passengers to Maldivian culture, hospitality, and local attractions through organized excursions and independent tours. During their brief stay guests explored cultural landmarks, engaged with local businesses, and contributed to the economy directly through purchases of Maldivian products and services.

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), facilitated the port call, ensured smooth operations and safe passenger movement through coordinated planning and ground support. Officials noted the successful handling of such a high scale vessel reflect both the growing capabilities of MPL and Maldives potential to scale cruise operation in the future.

The visit also emphasized the importance of long term investment in cruise infrastructure, including expanded berthing space, visitor terminals, and shore based services. Industry experts in the tourism and maritime sector see cruise tourism as an addition to the country’s resort based model, offering a new avenue for economic diversification.

With global cruise travel on the rise, the government and MPL plans to develop cruise terminal in Male’ and around strategically selected locations of the Maldives. The proposed facilities aim to build passenger arrival areas, customs and immigration counters, shore excursion access points, and commercial spaces to enhance the cruise passenger experience.

The terminals are expected to position the Maldives as a must visit destination on the Indian Ocean cruise map. Cruise tourism is a promising opportunity to diversify the nation’s tourism portfolio, support small business, and create new employment avenues withing the maritime sectors.
