Kulhudhuffushi Set to Become Northern Logistics Powerhouse as Ministry Economic Development and Trade and MPL Sign Landmark MOU

In a major step toward reshaping regional connectivity and economic development in the Maldives, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT) and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to kick-start the HDh. Kulhudhuffushi Port Extension Project.

The MOU was signed by Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, and MPL CEO, DCP (Retired) Mohamed Rishwan, during a ceremony held earlier today.

Under this phased development project, Kulhudhuffushi Port will see significant capacity expansion, modernization of cargo handling systems, and the establishment of warehousing infrastructure for both general and perishable goods. The project also includes key enhancements to inter-island transport systems, supporting efficient last-mile delivery and structured cargo movement across the country.

"This is a bold and necessary investment in our nation's logistics future,” said Minister Saeed. “It will not only improve supply chain efficiency from north to south but also directly benefit island communities by lowering transportation costs and enhancing market access.”

The project marks a milestone in the government’s broader efforts to modernize port infrastructure nationwide and strengthen the Maldives' trade network. It complements ongoing initiatives such as the UNCTAD TrainForTrade Modern Port Management Programme, recently launched by MPL to enhance national port management capacity.

With this MOU, Kulhudhuffushi is set to anchor itself as the commercial heartbeat of the northern Maldives, ushering in a new era of maritime logistics and regional prosperity.

This transformational initiative, a top priority of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, aims to develop Kulhudhuffushi into the primary logistics hub serving the northern atolls—Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Noonu—and neighboring islands.
