MPL Appoints 40 New Staff to Strengthen Inclusive Employment for Persons with Disabilities

In support of the government’s efforts to promote inclusive employment across the public sector

Malé, 20 November 2025 - In support of the government’s efforts to promote inclusive employment across the public sector, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) appointed 40 new staff with disabilities, awarding them official appointment letters at a ceremony held at Meerumaa Event Hall. The event was honored by Her Excellency First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed, who served as Chief Guest and presented the appointment letters. The ceremony was further attended by the Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr. Aishath Shiham, along with the CEO, board members, and senior executives of MPL.

In her remarks, the First Lady highlighted the importance of creating equal opportunities for persons with disabilities, describing employment as a human-dignifying decision. She noted that enabling individuals with disabilities to work in state enterprises is “a significant way of respecting human dignity” and “a perfect example of how we can show that we are equal.”

Of the 40 newly appointed staff, 35 will join Maldives Ports Limited in Malé, while the remaining positions are assigned to Hithadhoo Port Limited and Kulhudhuffushi Port Limited. This initiative fulfils one of His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s presidential pledges to expand employment opportunities for persons with disabilities within state-owned entities. MPL is the first public sector company to implement this commitment through the efforts of the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

The recruitment is part of MPL’s “Fahi” program, designed to create sustainable employment opportunities and foster an inclusive workforce. The initiative was launched under an agreement between MPL and the Ministry, aiming to strengthen social protection and expand job pathways for persons with disabilities.

In line with its commitment to accessibility, MPL launched a new feature on its website, enhancing digital access for persons with disabilities. The feature was officially inaugurated by Minister Dr. Aishath Shiham during the appointment ceremony, reflecting MPL’s ongoing efforts aimed at improving digital access for persons with special needs.

MPL has long championed inclusive employment, with 32 existing employees with disabilities currently contributing across various departments, some of whom have served the company for more than a decade. The appointment of 40 additional staff further reinforces MPL’s dedication to creating equal opportunities, fostering a diverse workforce and enabling all individuals to contribute to the nation’s maritime and logistics sector.
