MPL Collaborates with MNDF Coast Guard to Strengthen Port Security Through Certificate Program

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), in partnership with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard Training School, has successfully concluded a Certificate 1 course in Port Security.

This intensive one-month program, held at Girifushi under the expert guidance of the MNDF Coast Guard, trained a total of 30 participants.

The cohort included security personnel from MPL, Hithadhoo Port Limited (HPL), and Kulhudhuffushi Port Limited (KPL). On October 19, 2025, certificates were formally awarded during a ceremony at Bandaarakoshi by MPL’s CEO, DCP (Retd.) Mohamed Rishwan.

Purpose and Benefits of the Training for MPL Security Department:

1. Compliance with ISPS Code: The training ensures MPL meets the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code requirements by preparing personnel to effectively implement port security plans in line with global maritime security standards.

2. Enhancing Operational Readiness: Security staff are equipped with essential skills to detect threats, respond to security breaches, and manage emergencies swiftly and efficiently.

3. Strengthening Access Control: Trained officers can better oversee entry points, verify credentials, and prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas, safeguarding port facilities and cargo.

4. Promoting Safety Awareness: The program fosters a culture of vigilance and responsibility among port workers, reducing risks associated with human error or negligence.

5. Improving Coordination and Communication: Emphasis on teamwork and clear communication enhances collaboration among security personnel, port management, and external agencies such as the Coast Guard and Police.

6. Building Confidence and Professionalism: Certification boosts the credibility and capability of MPL’s Security Department, contributing to a secure and efficiently managed port environment.

The MNDF Coast Guard Training School’s curriculum combined practical drills such as emergency response exercises and workplace ethics with comprehensive theoretical instruction covering maritime safety, ISPS Code compliance, and health and safety protocols.

MPL remains committed to working closely with key institutions to strengthen security measures at commercial ports across the Maldives. Further initiatives are planned to continuously improve port safety and security, ensuring the protection of critical national maritime infrastructure.
