MPL Commits to Working with Fishermen on North Harbor Improvements

MPL took over management of North Harbor in June 2025

Malé, 07 August 2025 – Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has assured that all future changes to Malé North Harbor will be made in close consultation with the fishermen who use the area.

MPL, which took over management of the harbor in June this year, now oversees the Malé Commercial Port, North Harbor, and the fish market area extending to the crossroads of the local market. Since assuming responsibility, the company has begun improving facilities in the fishermen’s zone and holding regular meetings to gather feedback.

At the first such meeting, MPL CEO Mohamed Rishwan pledged to work alongside fishermen to resolve ongoing challenges. Plans include providing essential services such as water, electricity, ice, and fuel directly at the harbor. While Rishwan acknowledged that space constraints may not be fully resolved until 2027, he said steps are being taken now to ease congestion and improve daily operations.

Deputy CEO Mohamed Mueen added that changes to the fishermen’s area will be implemented based on their input, with priority on developing a dedicated space for their activities. Two special berths in Zone H will also be reserved for fishing vessels from other islands.

MPL confirmed that foreign nationals will not be permitted to conduct business in the harbor, and goods brought into restricted areas will face action. To further enhance safety, plans include installing CCTV cameras and setting up checkpoints.

As one of Malé’s busiest ports, North Harbor handles daily cargo and passenger vessel movements. MPL says its goal is to make it a more efficient, safe, and fisherman-friendly hub for the Maldives.
