MPL Trials Container Vessel Berthing at Thilafushi to Ease Port Congestion

To improve vessel turnaround time ahead of new container terminal development.

Thilafushi, 30 May 2026 – As part of ongoing efforts to ease congestion at the Malé Commercial Harbour (MCH), Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has successfully facilitated the trial berthing of a container vessel at the Thilafushi berth.

The MSS Galena berthed successfully at the facility, marking a key step in expanding port operations and distributing vessel traffic more efficiently.

The initiative is expected to ease congestion at MCH and improve vessel turnaround times by enabling the direct loading of empty containers from Thilafushi.

This operational adjustment serves as an interim measure to support cargo handling efficiency until the new Thilafushi Container Port becomes operational in November 2027.
