Reimagining Folklore: A Magical Eid Celebration with MPL

Eid Al’ Adha with our beloved folklore stories

Hulhumalé, 5 June 2025 - This year’s Eid Al’ Adha celebrations, organized by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, showcased Maldivian culture and community in a vibrant spirit. Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) joined the festivities with the creative concept “Reimagining Folklore”. Our goal was to bring our beloved folklore stories and reimagine them in a joyful way for the kids to enjoy.

We blended these characters with Disney magic to give them a modern twist:

Maakunbe was reimagined as Maui who hilariously inflated like a balloon when he overate.

Foolhudhigu Handi used his “Foolhu” as a helping tool for good, giving his character a heroic spin.

Santhi Mariyabu, once infamous for giving people bad teeth, returned as the beloved tooth fairy.

Safaru Kaiydha transformed into a Mermaid, who fixes everything broken on the island.

Handigaduvaru Dhon Kamana became Rapunzel, using her long hair to assist islanders.

To bring these stories to life, we created an interactive space filled with various activities for the children to enjoy:

A balloon popping game inspired by Maakunbe.

A magical well offering surprise gifts.

Hide and seek with the characters.

Coloring, costume dress-up and photo corners.

By retelling folklore through familiar themes and playful activities, we hope to keep our stories relatable and fun for the next generation.

This celebration would not have been possible without the incredible dedication of our team. Every detail from the storytelling to the setup – was brought to life by our incredible staff who gave their time, creativity, and heart to make this a success. Their energy and collaboration turned a creative concept into a truly memorable experience.

Thank you to everyone who visited our stall and shared the magic!
