Thilafushi Port Development Project Set to Transform Maldives’ Maritime Industry by 2026
A major step toward modernizing national cargo handling and logistics infrastructure
Malé, 13 May 2025 – The Thilafushi Port Development Project is gaining momentum as one of the Maldives Ports Limited’s most ambitious infrastructure initiatives to date, with completion targeted for 2026. The project aims to revolutionize the country’s maritime logistics and cargo handling capabilities.
Once operational, the Thilafushi Port is expected to significantly ease the congestion currently faced at Malé Commercial Harbor by shifting major cargo and container operations to Thilafushi Port.
This project is to be carried out in two phases. Phase 1, scheduled to be finished mid-2025, focuses on the construction of the International Logistics Terminal (ILT) and Phase 2 includes vital infrastructure works.
Stakeholders from logistics, shipping, and trade sectors have expressed strong support for the project, highlighting its potential to improve cost efficiency and reduce port delays.
With construction actively progressing and key infrastructure milestones already achieved, the Thilafushi Port is positioned to become a central pillar in the Maldives economic future.
