Thilafushi Port’s Empty Container Facility to Open by September
MPL advances key infrastructure to boost cargo handling capacity
Malé, 8 July 2025 – Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) announced that the empty container storage facility at the first phase of the Thilafushi Port is set to be completed and operational by September 2025. This milestone will mark a significant step forward in enhancing cargo transportation services in the Maldives.
Speaking on PSM’s "Raajje Miadhu" program, MPL’s Port Operations Manager, Ibrahim Visham Rasheed, confirmed that the empty container facility construction is finished. Jetty construction, contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), is 80% complete.
“We expect to complete the remaining utilities by mid-August and start operations in September,” said Visham. MPL’s Facilities Department is handling ground leveling, electrical work, and office renovations to support the project.
MPL’s Business Development Manager, Mohamed Aiman Ali, emphasized the facility’s importance amid growing economic activity and cargo volume.
“This port will improve services without additional costs for the public, businesses, or industries,” said Aiman. He added that approximately 700 to 1,000 employees will be involved in operations and support roles once the port is fully functional.
The new empty container facility will allow containers currently stored in Malé and Hulhumalé to be relocated to Thilafushi, easing congestion and streamlining cargo handling for importers.
MPL aims to complete the empty container storage work by the end of August and begin operations in September, a key milestone in expanding the Maldives’ maritime infrastructure.
